Founded in 1903, Newcastle Permanent has been providing Australians with fairer banking for over 120 years. Established in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham, it began as a Starr-Bowkett Society, a co-operative financial institution designed to provide interest-free loans to its members.
From its earliest days, Newcastle Permanent was built on the principle of mutual support – members pooled their resources to help one another achieve homeownership, offering a fairer alternative to traditional banks.

Over the following decades, it continued to grow, and today, it provides banking services to communities from the Central Coast to the Mid North Coast and beyond. The introduction of the iconic ‘house’ logo in 1970 symbolised its commitment to home ownership, while advancements like ATMs in the 1980s, online banking in the 2000s, and the launch of its digital home loan in recent years have continued to improve accessibility and convenience for customers.
Beyond banking, Newcastle Permanent is dedicated to giving back to the communities it serves. In 2003, it established the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, which has since provided over $25 million in funding to organisations supporting health, education and social wellbeing. This initiative has helped fund life-changing projects, from medical research to youth support programs, making a tangible difference in regional communities.

A significant milestone in Newcastle Permanent’s history came in 2023 when it merged with Greater Bank to form Newcastle Greater Mutual Group. This merger strengthened its ability to provide competitive banking services while staying true to its customer-owned model.
Each year, Newcastle Permanent contributes around $1.5 million to community programs, supporting grassroots sports, financial literacy initiatives and local events. The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition, which has run since 1981, continues to inspire thousands of students each year.
Through more than a century of change, Newcastle Permanent has remained dedicated to its purpose: delivering financial services that benefit customers and the communities they live in. As it looks to the future, it continues to build on its legacy of trust, innovation and community support – proving that customer-owned banking isn’t just about better banking, but about building a better future.
