At the core of customer-owned banking is a commitment to people over profits – a vision championed by Jack Harvey. In the 1960s, as a dedicated Postmaster, Jack recognised a need for fair and affordable banking. At that time, banks were not offering competitive interest rates, and credit cards were a luxury reserved for the wealthy. Jack believed that financial services should be accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few.
Determined to make a difference, Jack gathered a small group of like-minded friends and founded the Queensland Postal Co-operative. Initially created to support postal workers with loans and financial services, this co-operative eventually evolved into the Credit Union of Australia (CUA), which is today known as Great Southern Bank.

Jack’s vision laid the foundation for a movement that prioritised people over profit. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, Great Southern Bank has become the custodian of over 170 credit unions’ legacies, each contributing to the organisation’s rich history.
Even after Jack’s passing in 2015, his principles remain central to Great Southern Bank’s purpose. Originally founded to address gaps in lending by providing small loans to those underserved by the traditional financial institutions of the day, the bank has since evolved to focus on helping Australians overcome one of today’s greatest challenges: homeownership.
To honour Jack’s enduring legacy, Great Southern Bank established the Jack Harvey Excellence Award. This prestigious award celebrates team members who embody Jack’s passion for fair, people-focused banking. Recipients exemplify the spirit of mutuals, demonstrating integrity, community focus, and a dedication to helping members succeed. The award not only keeps Jack’s legacy alive but also inspires future generations to uphold his values.
Jack Harvey’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of dedication, vision, and community spirit. His commitment to fairness continues to guide Great Southern Bank, ensuring it remains a trusted partner for its members and a shining example of excellence in the mutual banking sector.
