Girudala Community Co-operative Society has served Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and South Sea Islander people in Bowen and the Whitsundays for more than 50 years. Established as a community-owned organisation, Girudala provides programs and services in health promotion, affordable housing, home and community care, family wellbeing, employment and training.
A blueprint for co-operative care
As demand for culturally responsive services has grown, Girudala has embraced a period of renewal, supported through the Care Together program. The co-operative has clarified its vision and priorities, anchored in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of being, knowing and doing, and is strengthening its capacity to meet current and future community needs.
This process includes a refreshed strategic plan and business model, greater focus on member engagement through workshops and yarning circles, and a modernised constitution that embeds both contemporary governance standards and cultural values. Board capability is being enhanced through governance and compliance training, ensuring strong leadership for the next generation.
Strengthening services and workforce
Girudala continues to expand its core programs in affordable housing, aged care, disability support and family wellbeing. Investments are being made in infrastructure, service quality and workforce development, with an emphasis on culturally competent care and leadership. Recruitment, training and retention strategies are positioning the organisation to respond to growing demand while safeguarding cultural integrity.
Looking ahead
By building new partnerships locally and nationally, Girudala is consolidating its role as a leader in Indigenous community-controlled care. Its work demonstrates how the co-operative model, grounded in culture and community voice, can deliver sustainable, holistic services that strengthen both individuals and families.
