The Esk District Co-operative has been a cornerstone of the Somerset region in Queensland for more than a century. Formed in the early 1900s, the co-operative has long provided essential retail services to the community and today owns and operates Toogoolawah IGA, Toogoolawah Mitre 10 and Esk IGA.
Early history
The co-operative traces its roots to the first General Store in Toogoolawah, originally owned by Thompson and Francis, with Frank McNamara as manager and George Allen as assistant. As the local population and dairy industry grew, Nestlé purchased the Condensery in 1907, prompting the need for larger business premises. In 1909, the store moved into a new building, which became a key part of the town’s commercial life.
Growth and community ownership
Over the decades, the store evolved into a co-operative model, owned by and operated for the benefit of local members. The Esk District Co-operative Limited continues to serve the community in a similar way to a supermarket and hardware outlet, ensuring ownership and profits stay within the region.
Today
More than 100 years on, the co-operative operates three modern retail businesses under the IGA and Mitre 10 banners, offering groceries, household essentials and hardware supplies. These stores provide vital local employment, keep services accessible in smaller towns, and contribute directly to community life.
