Celebrating an incredible 30 years of local artists and activism.
Hobart, Tasmania – Art From Trash, an independent, not-for-profit organisation created and run by Resource Workers Cooperative (who you probably know from the South Hobart Tip Shop), is proud to celebrate 30 years of local artists and activism with its 2026 exhibition.
Art From Trash is an annual exhibition that promotes and celebrates art of all kinds, made with ‘trash’ materials. Anyone and everyone is welcome to exhibit their work, and every year the exhibition features over 100 artworks – from school students to esteemed and nationally recognised artists. It’s a real melting pot of creativity.
This year’s opening night will be held on Friday. May 15th 6pm, with the exhibition available for viewing 10am-5pm until Sunday, May 24th at The Long Gallery, Salamanca.
Thirty years is a serious milestone for anything, but particularly for independent and local art. As an organisation, Art From Trash is extremely proud of this achievement and what it’s meant for the community.
For established artists in the region, the annual exhibition is a challenge to create something meaningful for their artistic expression while using unconventional materials they might otherwise avoid. For young kids, it can be their first experience of art with a capital ‘A’ – instilling an important sense of independence, pride and identity, and potentially sparking a lifelong relationship with art and creativity. For emerging artists, it’s a wonderful way to bring friends and family together for a fun and unique experience, out of the house and among community – something essential in an evermore digital life.
Over three decades of exhibitions, Art From Trash will have showcased thousands of artworks and helped divert literal tonnes of rubbish from landfill. Not to mention the countless relationships, friendships and conversations sparked in the process – the priceless element of this endeavour.
Art From Trash’s mission is two-pronged: to educate and change mindsets about what is trash and what is valuable materials, and to celebrate and nurture artists from all walks of life, bringing them together with pride and joy.
The organisation has always been not-for-profit and will always be fiercely independent. This steadfast commitment has been rewarded with huge opening nights, thousands of gallery visitors and immeasurable goodwill.
The public is invited to help kick off this year’s exhibition with a bang. The launch night will take place on Friday, May 15th from 6:00pm – 8:30pm. Entry is free, with donations welcome. Drinks and snacks will be available.
