Thoughtful Foods, the food co-operative at the University of New South Wales in Sydney’s east, celebrated our first potluck of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 (IYC 2025). Eight members and guests brought food – and stories of finding food sustainably while travelling. The food and conversation were both equally enjoyable!
Fare for the evening included a number of salads (rainbow, radicchio and two types of fennel salad – since fennel had been in the vegie boxes the week before), pan-fried tofu, braised zucchini with mushroom, mochi and kombucha (and yes, both of these were made by members, too).

Potlucks are a key part of our celebrations at TF. In 2024, we turned 30, and our birthday party was a big potluck dinner as well. Members and some former members who we managed to get in touch with just in time – shared their stories and memories of the co-op, and we’d dug up newsletters, recipe books and more (some dating back almost to the founding!). In this International Year of Cooperatives, we’ll be leading discussions at our potlucks about the seven co-op principles, reinforcing our commitment to the ideals of community and sustainability that we share.
